I believe that deforestation is a threat to our planet because forest covers 13% of land area, also forests give of oxygen which is essential for the human body and provides homes for wild life. 1.6 billion people rely on forest needs such as water, food, and shelter. If the world is under deforestation it jeopardizes these benefits that are naturally given to us.
A negative effect of deforestation is the erosion of the soil due to more exposure to the sun, wiping out nutrients such as nitrogen that are essential for maintaining the fertility of the land. Also, forests function in the storage of water and the regulation of the water cycle. They absorb water from rainfall and other waterways through their roots and release it back into the atmosphere. From the atmosphere, the water is re-accessed through rainfall and the cycle continues.
Also our rivers would be polluted by soil because without trees or roots, nothing can bind or hold soil together in place so when water erosion would occur, the soil would directly be channeled into our waterways, which will effect drinking water since most of our drinking water come from rivers.
i strongly agree with you Sarabi, because as you said the forest pretty much substains the life of our planet due to it inhabitants and the shelter it provides
you have an excellent point
I believe deforestation affects more than just the 1.6 billion. It affects everyone. I say this because of majority of the oxygen we breath is produced in these forest.
I agree with tariq deforestation has a strong effect on us as human beings, without oxygen we wouldn't be able to survive.
I 100% agree with Sarabi she has a excellent point.
Very well, said Rabi!! Totally Agree!!!
I agree with Sarabi, the deforestation of our planet will indeed have negative impact on the people that will live in forested areas will be severe.
I believe that deforestation is a threat to the wellbeing of our planet because it is a contributor to global warming, which in turn could be one of the major causes of the greenhouse effect. It also affects the water cycle, by reducing the transpiration of trees thus resulting in a drier climate. Deforestation leads to less water content in soil and groundwater, as well as less atmospheric moisture. It can eventually cause erosion, flooding, and landslides, by reducing soil cohesion.
I agree with both Sierra, and Ceannda.
I agree Sierra because with all that soil erosion soil takes a long time to build up, and without it, many plants can't survive.
I agre with Sierra we often overlook the fact that trees and forests are responsible for keeping for keeping the ground below us in place!
I agree with sierra deforestation has quite a bit of side affects on our earth that we don't take a good amount of consideration. For example the erosion deforestation causes can affect the quality of the soil and how plant life regrows.
Sierra those are some salient points to the problem of deforestation.
Yes Sierra I agree with you. Hopefully people will see this and change their minds about deforestation. We need to stop deforestation .
i believe deforestation is a threat even though the wood cut down meets the demands for products we use today, and the land provides space for business use. Its still an issue, the forest povides oxygen for our planet, because 31% of our planet is forest, also it provides home for wild life that people hunt and feed off of. So if there is no food for the people there could be famines.
Good job Kai! I agree with everything you said! :)
I agree with Mikai because soon there will be more unnecessary business that will take up space doing more bad than good, because it will increase tax, and use up a lot of non-renewable resources.
I Strongly agree with you Mikai because like you said,"The forest provides Oxygen for our planet", and without oxygen Humans will not be able to survive. So if trees give off oxygen that's a Plus for the Human race and also wild life and like you also said we feed off of wild life so they need oxygen also in order to live.
Unquestionably the most open-minded comment within this forum. I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said. Not only have you outlined the problems of deforestation but you have also subtly explained why such an heinous act occurs in the first place; resources and space. Please don't be misplaced by my comments, in no way am I trying to justify deforestation, however this forum is riddled with repetitive comments that explain deforestation (very well) but doesn't provide any suggestions to how people can go about solving it. I personally would suggest that for every tree that is cut down by villagers and landowners that they plant 100 more. To anyone who has commented or who is going to comment, I strongly suggest that you take your understanding of deforestation and it's threat and suggest solutions of your own instead of defining deforestation for millionth time.
Great Job Mr. Johnston :) Well said! Love how you said that we do need the products that the forests provide, but at the same time it would have other negative effects on our oxygen, wild life, food, and humans. :)
Deforestation refers to the loss or destruction of naturally occurring forests, primarily due to human activities such as logging, cutting trees for fuel, slash-and-burn agriculture just to name a few. It not only contributes to changes in the climate, it also causes localized changes in the weather. Trees transpire, or release water into the atmosphere, during photosynthesis. Changes in weather and shelter cause deforested areas to undergo a tremendous loss of biodiversity, which has global consequences when forests harbor unique species.
Wow. Valid thoughts Michaela. I think you have nailed key points. I definitely see why deforestation is a real threat.
Great points. This has helped me to realize what deforestation can really do.
oseventy f the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are losing their habitats to deforestation. Loss of habitat can lead to species extinction. This is not only a biodiversity tragedy but also has negative consequences for medicinal research and local populations who rely on the animals and plants in the forests for hunting and medicine.
I agree with Norman. Not only are they home to these plants and animals but many will be suprisd to know that some people (including indigenous)also live there.
I agree with Norman. This world would become very dull if we couldn't look at nature and the animals that live their for inspiration.
Yes i agree. We do need to consider the animals homes and and plants that we are destroying. :)
Deforestation is always going to be a bad thing.I guess since it takes a short amount for trees to reproduce that humans have just thought that the trees will just grow back. But when forests are completely cut down then there is no were for seeds of trees to planted because a lot of time forests may be sitting on high valued raw materials that the world needs.
I strongly agree, but :
" But when forests are completely cut down then there is no were for seeds of trees to planted. "
I wouldn't say that there is no where for seeds of trees to be planted, because seeds can be planted in the exact same spot they removed the tree from. Now of course, the whole process will be restarted, and soil may have lost some of its nutrients to nourish the plants growth, but I still believe the new root can be planted.
"because a lot of time forests may be sitting on high valued raw materials that the world needs. "
I'm guessing by "high valued raw materials" , you mean soil, so.
Deforestation is definetly a threat to not only the environment and the world around us but also to each of us personally. Many of the vital resources that we take for granted daily would not be adequately available to us without forests. Oxygen, clean fresh water and many plant species used in medicines and other products are found in forests. These forests are also home to endangered specis, and even people! They also deserve a lot of the credit for temperature regulation in our world. If we ill the forests, we're killing ourselves.
I completely agree. Deforestation destroys chances of finding new medicines from plants and animals found in these areas.
I totally agree with you Mish! If deforestation continues at the rate that its going now, In the long run we will have put ourselves in danger.
I believe deforestation is a real threat to the world and even more so to the people that live in the areas in which this is happening. Forest provide a lot of our oxygen and remove much of the CO2 that we put into our atmosphere. By destroying forest we are poisoning our air and destroying our environment. Animals rely on trees for shelter, and food. By removing trees we are causing those animals to either die or to move to a new habitat. Forest also keep the ground in place in some areas. Removing trees makes that area more susceptible to flooding, landslides and erosion of the land. This is why i believe deforestation is bad.
Deforestation is a major problem. It is not that major of a threat now, but later down the line, it will be. Due to deforestation, it leads to many factors that affect our planet.
Living organisms depend on trees daily for survival, because we depend on plant life to remove all toxin and chemical gases in the air, and converts it to fresh, clean oxygen we can then again breathe. With deforestation, the less trees we have, the less fresh oxygen we have, leading to a sudden death of a poison gas that has filled our lungs rather than fresh oxygen.
Trees also provide shade from sun and rain. Without trees, the suns rays will penetrate our skin, increasing risks of skin cancer, heat strokes, or other external sun related problems.
Such a valid point Haley. I totally agree.
I agree with Halley trees are a necessity in our everyday living and without them we would be in serious trouble. The natural resources we get from deforestation aren't worth what trees do while living.
I also agree with Halley, tress are a necessity, for one, they help us breath and this is needed as humans.
Yes Halley good comment . We need to protect our environment. GOd created the land and he wouldn't be happy if the land was destroyed
Deforestation is a very real environmental threat. Our once vast forests are disappearing. All around the world, trees are being cut down too quickly for earth to regenerate new forests. Illegal logging has become a way of life for some communities, with timber being taken from wherever it is accessible, sold to collectors and processed in huge sawmills. In the absence of sufficient alternative economic development, this is an irresistible lure for the local communities.
This is a very valid and insightful Ashé! What website did you copy this off of lol ;)
Very Valid and insightful point Ashé! Which website did you get this off of lol:)
I do agree that deforestation is a major problem in our world today. Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres of forest roughly the size of Panama are lost each year, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. Some people do not realize how necessary forests are they provide natural resources such as food for us to eat and oxygen that we need to breath.
I agree with James. Even though deforestation causes such a threat, most people believe it does not concern them. Since they are oblivious to the situation they do nothing about it.
I agree and like the facts you have pointed out and said about deforestation.
Deforestation is clearing Earth's forests on a massive scale, often resulting in damage to the quality of the land.Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or to people’s need to provide for their families. So even though it may cause destruction, for some people its because it is a necessity for them to make a living such as farmers.
Great point Josh alot of people do it for money. For them its a way they support themselves and there family.
Or it is possible that it could be a way of getting rich by cutting down trees to get rich.
Just to step out of the box a little global warming is fueled by greenhouse gasses, which are absorbed by trees. As such, our forests help to regulate our climate and stabilize it, despite the pollutants we spread through the air. The more forests we lose, the less of a buffer we have, and the greater the impact of those unabsorbed greenhouse gasses.
I totally agree Channa
Deforestation is a real dilemma that can affect the environment in many different ways. When trees are cut down, countless species are left homeless without a habitat. This can affect humans because trees give off oxygen, a much needed nutrient for us to survive. In my eyes, cutting down trees is like cutting down lives...
I agree with Dasha. Mostly from what I stated in my own comment about trees being cut down. This is because deforestation threatens trees the most.
Dasha i think everyone sort of said that already you could have been a little different, but you made a good point. next time use a different website okay. :)
Indeed, cutting down trees is like cutting down lives, dramatic, but fairly accurate. With that being said and us as a people being so understanding to this problem what are we doing to solve it? Nothing, we can talk about it, argue and debate but if we do not propose anything or act on anything what is the point?
very strong argument as always tre, but I feel as though no one will act upon it because they just don't care
Forests are being destroyed by acid rain resulting from our pollution-causing activities and through the introduction of disease and invasive species. Deforestation is a very real environmental threat. Our vast forests are disappearing. All around the world, trees are being cut down too quickly for earth to regenerate new forests.
I agree with Sanchez, deforestation is a threat to the enviorment
This is a valid point Sanchez. I agree
Deforestation is bad becuase it effects the enviroment, destroying the enviroment for animals and bringing more trouble for natural resources to expand. Also Deforstation can lead on leveled land which then can produce landslides.
Deforestation is a real threat because it has many negative effects. Such as, climate changes, soil erosion destruction, change in water cycle, and loss habitat. Also more carbon dioxide is released into the air, increases the effect of global warming. Plus, animals' homes are destroyed, leading to extinction. Lastly, trees contribute to the water cycle by absorbing water, when the water cycle is disturbed the atmosphere and bodies of water dry up.
Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rainforests because these forests are home to much of the world’s biodiversity. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching.
Through this forum I have discovered that deforestation is "bad", and indeed it is. However, deforestation is not only a threat but a complex one. According to Jenna Iacurci of Nature World News, experts are struggling to propose a solution because each idea has drawbacks. It is good to understand the damaging effects of deforestation and to realise that it is a threat, but what are we as a people doing to try to resolve this problem?
Cutting down tress is limiting our survival rate because one of the major factors that we need to survive is air.
Although your point is somewhat true the earth cannot run out of oxygen (in my opinion) it would be nearly impossible to completely devastate all forms of Trees or greenery witch create oxygen for us mammals
I think that deforestation has positive effects. It allows communities, housing, office buildings, factories etc to be built. It can also be beneficial for agricultural reasons, having more production of food and minerals that people need and lack. Deforestation can make communication/transport easier, gives people jobs, supplies countries with raw materials, more wood products, and much more.
We are so fast to say that deforestation is a "threat" but we are the ones benefiting and using the materials from the process of deforestation. :)
That is a very valid point. I never thought about it like that before.
Yes I agree that we do benefit from it but that's being a little selfish what about the animals and everything else that is effected by this
Yes, we may be benefiting from deforestation but once we knock down one forest, humans are going to want to knock down another to house their needs. We cannot help our selfishness for it is our sinful nature.
In my opinion, deforestation is a real threat for many reasons. One is, deforestation causes many species of plants and animals to go extinct. We as humans, whether we know it or not, depend heavily on both plants and animals and because of deforestation, there is lack of them. Secondly, tress provide oxygen and we need oxygen to breathe so without them we would die.
Oh shoot Mae but I agree because with out the animals and plants we won't be able to enjoy the delicious food we love to eat
good point but we can also look at it from the stand point of the growing population (refering to population density) and the fact that not all "deforestation" is bad because we have some crazy tree huggers that call cutting down a tree "deforestation" i believe its not completely wrong but can be done in moderation witch people dont seen to do or even care about
I agree Dahji, because lots of these people don't understand that a lot of what they benefit from in daily life is the result of foresting, not necessarily deforestation.
Very valid points j'mae without trees we would die!
That is very true J'mae and even though it is reality many of us ignore it and they continue to cut down trees without thinking of the consequences.
This is a very awesome point and shows the many harmful effects deforestation can have on animals and society.
Although we may die if we have no oxygen Jmae, trees are not the only place we get oxygen from and as described by John Keersemaker, a forester from the Arbor Day Foundation; it is almost impossible for us to cut down all the trees in the world at the rate at which we are currently building the economy, simply because trees are actually one of the last sources of oxygen. The Earth's atmosphere itself contains plenty of oxygen and it just changes every now and again, but trees just happen to produce oxygen as a bi-product of photosynthesis and therefore release it, but we are not entirely dependent on the trees alone.
I think it is a true problem because because it is the permanent destruction of our forest. Deforestation effects us and our animals because once the forest is cut down there habitats are gone. This can lead to the extinction of a lot of our animals and plants.
i feel that although you are correct i don't think that forest can be that easily permanently destroyed. once a forest is on its way to destruction there is a revival period where you can balance out the amount of trees being destroyed with new trees since they are a renewable resource.
I agree with your point Taz, because we need the trees and widelife for future generations
Deforestation is the action of cutting down large amounts of forests. Today the forests still cover 30% of our land, however within 100 years all rain forests could disappear if nothing is done against it.
Forests are cut down for money, agriculture, paper products, access of forests and growing of urban sprawl. Sometimes also nature causes deforestation by wildfires.
Deforestation causes extinction of many species, it drives climate change and worsens global warming.
The best solution would be to stop cutting down trees, however that will not be possible, as the financial realities show. The better solution is to balance the cutting by adding new trees and eliminating clear-cutting.
YESS DAHJI! I agree with ur points. Deforestation should be balanced. We need the products made from the trees YET we should be killing many species and making globe warming worse.
Deforestation is a real threat it impacts the worlds water cycle. Deforestation not only has a great affect on the water cycle but it also has a dramatic effect on where and how people in places such as Brazil make a living because some of them live and make their living in the forests.
I believe that deforestation is definitely a real threat for both us and our communities because the forests contribute to our economy in many ways. They are not are not only a beautiful landscape for the community but they also give off important gasses into the air that we need. Also without forests a lot of animals will go away with it. certain animals live in forests and once forests are gone so will they.
You are so right Ali! Without the tress our economy would really downgrade and we would have less resources to depend on.
I agree with you Ali. The more trees we cut down there would be a depletion of animals that live in the forest.
Deforestation is the process whereby natural forests are cleared through logging and/or burning, either to use the timber or to replace the area for alternative uses. I feel that deforestation affects everything especially the animals. Now the animals have no place to live and people wonder why they're always animals in the yard for example Florida is builds on the edge of the swamp so they're always alligators and snakes everywhere this is a prime example of Deforestation
Valid point Kellie
Kellie `your point is very valid, save the trees!!
Deforestation is bad because it destroys the land that God created. It also destroys animal's homes. Animals are God's creature. We should stop deforestation because it is making God angry. That is one reason why he punishing us.
As Sam says it destroys God's land. Deforestation reduces the amount of wildlife on the earth and it takes away resources that people need to live.
Deforestation in my opinion is simply inhumane. It is the equivalent of death or murder. Deforestation diminishes the trees an exotic plants that have many essential uses. Trees provide us clean, breathable air yet we decide to cut them down and pollute the very air the trees are cleansing with construction equipment and many vehicles that require gas and give off harmful fumes. Also, deforestation causes the animals that lived in that forest to have to adjust to a different habitat and most end up dying.
This is so true Nkeeme it is killing our environment!
Trees are critical to environmental health. They absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, provide habitat for wildlife and anchor topsoil to the ground. Trees are cut down to clear land for agricultural and commercial development or to harvest timber. The effects of this deforestation are far-reaching and affect more than just the forested communities it affects the human communities too because the trees give us oxygen so we can breathe.
That's the truth right there! Deforestation really doesn't just affect the forests and all of that, it affects us more than we know it! Hmm
Yes I totally agree it doesn't effect forests and all of that. It clearly is effecting us socially, mental, and physically.
Deforestation is a BIG threat, not only to our environment but to the whole world. Why is this you ask. Well, deforestation is seen as a major threat to society due to the fact that it deprives the environment of oxygen which can lead to global warming and it destroys habitats for birds like woodpeckers causing some species to die out or to migrate. Also trees make up most of the land so if they are continually cut down, the land would look very empty and lastly the trees give the land a lot of beauty with their colours so why destroy that.
Great Point Tarita!
Deforestation take away home for wildlife and produce essential factors to help us. They produce vital oxygen and provide homes for people and wildlife. People rely on benefits forests offer, including food, fresh water, clothing, traditional medicine and shelter
Yes Micah, but there are solutions. For every tree they cut down, they can plant two new ones somewhere else. The government can base their economy on something else rather than options that will hurt the environment.
Yes, deforestation is a problem because it decreases the amount of shade to an area, and the level of oxygen in the atmosphere because tress take our carbon dioxide, in return for oxygen.
Egypt I don't think your comment is a strong valid point. I highly doubt that it would get that bad in life when we will have a lack of oxygen.
Deforestation is a real threat. It's not a threat just to animals and the environment but its a threat humans as well. First of all when you think of deforestation you should think of all the animals whose homes/ habitat are being destroyed. Secondly, when deforestation occurs there is a decrease in natural resources which we use for everyday life. Thirdly, deforestation includes cutting down trees and plants, which is our main source of oxygen which we need to survive. So deforestation is a real threat to basically every living thing.
I do agree with u kira. If this process continues the world will just become worse and worse. Deforestation is a harmful process because tress provide oxygen and we need oxygen to breathe but with the shortage of trees.. it will effect of lives
yes kira, i do agree. You have an excellent point if this process continues the world will become worse and worse.
I think that deforestation can have a postivr effect and negative effect. A positive effect, like my friend Daijah Stowe said, can be that it allows for the evolvement of a community. Giving opportunity for more housing, businesses, hotels, etc. It can be a negative effect because it destroys homes for animals and different species. It also decreases nature reserves.
YES, Deforestation is a problem to the earth, Deforestation is turning large areas of the planet into deserts also the top layers of soil become hard, as a result of which rainwater cannot seep into the ground to grow plants.
I Agree that Deforestation is a treat. Deforestation refers to the loss or destruction of occurring forest.. It contributes to changes in many things such as the climate and weather. This process is a treat for many reason, for example, animals homes are destroyed which leads to extinction, cutting of trees leads to less water content in soil and groundwater, also Tress provide us with oxygen! cutting them down is just Making the world worse for humans.
Yes, i agree that deforestation is a big problem to our earth. Because trees provide shelter/habitat and food for many species. Trees also provide oxygen and depending on what type of tree it could provide food and medicine for humans as well.
i agree with you skye
Although it is clear that deforestation is a serious problem, trees and wildlife aren't the only ones being affected. Lots of non-renewable resources like metal and oil go into harvesting timber. Not to say that deforestation isn't as bad but with the right care it can easily be fixed, unlike the related problems with non-renewable resources.
Honestly Nikholas I never thought about how metal and oil come from out of harvesting. You made a good point
I do believe that deforestation is a threat to our plant because it reduces the transpiration of trees making the climate drier. Which lead to less water content underground the the moisture in the air that the plants and trees give off. However Deforestation does have a positive effect also the opportunity for more housing and bussiness etc and the evolomemt of community.
i beleive that deforestation is a real threat in our world today because it effects trees, wildlife and lots of non-renewable resources.
I think that deforestation is a real threat. besides the obvious facts like the decrease of oxygen, deforestation will decrease good soil, certain animal species and even increase pollution.
On the other hand, Zakiyyah was right when she said there can be positives. one being the investment opportunities. For example, a foreign investor might want to build a new hotel in your country, but there is no room in the city area and he still is willing to pay, you would he to create new land if you take the offer.
i agree with the following answers. i agree because if we dont start to take care of the animals they will eventually start to die off. therefore the animals that "clean up" after humans mess will die off and then the earth will become dirty and overtime we will die off.
I believe that deforestation is a problem. Its a problem because it effects many things like climate change. Apparently deforestation is considered one of the contributing factors of global climate change. Other effects of deforestation are the loss of species, water cycle, soil erosion, and life quality.
I believe that deforestation is a threat in the world because cutting down trees is also cutting down our oxygen. we do need oxygen to breathe.
Yes deforestation is real threat because the forest provides many natural resources for us and provides many habitats for animals.
when deforestation occurs, we not only loose money and natural resources, we also loose our wild animals and many medicinal herbs that the fertile soils produces.
My name is Mr. Miller, and I will be your instructor for this school year.
